American grandmasters in Vásárhely
Két Amerikában élő nagymester, Penelope Bolega és József Bolega látogatta meg a Máté Taekwondo és Hapkido KHSE-t, január közepén. A nagymesterek 48 éve jártak utoljára Magyarországon és igen nagy meglepetéssel és örömmel fogadták mennyit változott az ország, a hazai taekwondo.
Two American grandmasters, Penelope Bolega and József Bolega visited the Máté Taekwondo and Hapkido KHSE in the middle of January. The grandmasters have not been in Hungary for 48 years and they were very surprised and glad how much our country and the Hungarian taekwondo has changed during that time.
József Bolega nagymester Amerikában több iskolát is vezet, számos sikeres tanítvány került már ki a keze alól. Rendszeresen ismerkedik az interneten keresztül a világ harcművészeivel. Kínától egészen Afrikáig, több országban is járt már. 48 év után nem csak a taekwondo miatt, hanem letelepedési szándékkal is tért vissza Magyarországra.
Grandmaster József Bolega directs more schools in America and had several successful students. He frequently contacts with other martial artists from all over the world. He has visited many countries from China to Africa. After 48 years he returned to Hungary not just because of the taekwondo but to settle as well.

„The country has developed a lot. We have been in 41 states in America, besides many foreign countries and we were happy to see that Hódmezővásárhely, Szeged and Budapest are much more beautiful and cleaner than many other metropolises.
Sokszor nézegetem az iskolák honlapját. A tanítványaimét is, akik Boszniában, Hamburgban sőt Japánban is nyitottak iskolát. Mikor ezeket az oldalakat nézem, mindig olyat keresek akik taekwondot és hapkidot is tanítanak. Fontos, hogy a website legyen informatív, hogy közel hozza hozzám az oktatókat, a tanítványokat. Szeretem látni a képeken a fejlődést és a tanítványok, a mesterek elhivatottságát. Mikor úton voltunk a feleségemmel, nem vártam ezt a színvonalat. Benne vannak a tanítók abban a szerepben, hivatásban, amit csinálnak. A negatív oldala ennek a dolognak pedig, hogy ezt minden segítség nélkül hozták létre. Saját idejüket, energiájukat feláldozva és nem kímélve hozták létre és tartják fent ezt az iskolát.
I have been watching the websites of schools, even of my own students, who started schools in Bosnia, Hamburg or even in Japan. When I am watching these sites, I am always looking for those who teach taekwondo and hapkido as well. It is important to have an informative website, which brings close the trainers and students. I like to see the development on the photos, and the mission of students and trainers. On coming here I did not expect this high standard. The negative aspect of this is that they built it up without any help. They created and keep up this school by sacrificing their own time and energy.
Csodálom a Máté család hozzáállását, nem tudom, hogy nekem támogatás nélkül, a család és a munka mellett ezt létrehozni és fenntartani sikerült e volna. A saját gyermekem mellett más, idegen emberek gyermekéért élni, őket is nevelni, tanítani.
I admire the attitude of the Máté family, I don’t know if I could have created and kept up the same without any support besides work and family. To live for other foreign people’s children, to educate and teach them besides your own ones.
Amit Magyarországon tapasztaltam, hogy nincs harcművészet, mindenki magában próbálkozik, és ha nem fognak össze az iskolák, csupán egy fehér folt marad ez az ország a térképen. Kapcsolatokat kell építeni a nagyobb városok sportolóival és kiépíteni egy hálózatot. Mint maga az atomszerkezet. És akkor elérhetünk valamit. Ha csak sportolunk és versenyekre járunk, de nem tanítunk folyamatosan, elfogy az utánpótlás, nem lesz aki folytassa a taekwondot. A tanítók elhivatottsága és kötelessége, hogy más iskolákkal együtt dolgozzanak, közös szemináriumot szervezzenek.
My experience in Hungary is that there is no martial art and everybody is trying on his own. If these schools do not unite, this country remains a white patch on the map. You must make contacts with the sportsmen of bigger cities and you have to build a network. Like the structure of the atom. Together we can reach something. If we just do the sport and compete but do not educate continuously, the new generation will be lost. The determination and obligation of trainers is to work together with other schools and organize seminars together.
Hihetetlen az az érzés mikor a fekete övet felkötjük, hiszen hirtelen hatalmas felelősség rakódik ránk. Mert nem magunkra kötjük fel, hanem a gyerekekre, tanítványainkra, mert itt dől el, hogy mit hagyunk magunk után, hisz a mi időnk már csökken, de az övék még nő.
It is an unbelievable feeling when we tie up the black belt on a student since we get a huge responsibility. Because we do not tie it on ourselves but on the children, on our students and it is then decided what will be left after we are gone, as our time reduces but theirs will grow.
A mestereknek nagyon pontosan tudniuk kell, mit tanítanak, hiszen az ő felelősségük, hogy mire használják a tudást a tanítványok. A sport, mint taekwondo az utcai harcban például használhatatlan. Talán már nem is élnék, ha sportként használtam volna a tudásom az amerikai utcákon.
The masters must know very precisely what they teach, because it is their responsibility how the students use the knowledge. Taekwondo as a sport is unusable in street fight. I would not be alive if I used my knowledge as a sport on the American streets.
Mindig annyit tanítunk a gyerekeknek, amit az öv megenged. Nem érettek még a tudásra. Láttam már olyan iskolákat ahol a cukor úgymond kifolyt a teásbögréből, mert annyi tudást akartak átadni, hogy a tanítványok nem tudták befogadni, sokan fel is adták és más harcművészetet választottak maguknak. Egy mester ezt nem teheti meg. A Máté család ezt remekül csinálja. Ha egy idegen mester jön egy iskolába nem biztos, hogy minden tudását átadja, hiszen fel tudja mérni, hogy a tanítványok milyen szinten állnak. De nagyon fontos hogy legyen újdonság, új szemszög, mutasson olyan edzésformákat, vagy mozdulatokat, amit ő alkalmaz a saját óráin.
We can teach the children as much as their belt allows. They are not grown up enough for the knowledge. I have seen schools where „sugar spilled from the mug”, because they wanted to give so much knowledge, that the students could not absorb it. Many of them gave it up and found a different kind of martial art. A master cannot act like this. But the Máté family does this fantastically. If an unknown master comes to a school he does not show all his knowledge, because he can assess the knowledge level of the students. But it is very important to have something new, a new angle, a new form of training or movement he uses in his own class.
Nem szabad ágakra sem szakítani a taekwondot. Ha csak egy ágat erősítünk, szétszakad minden. Ismertem meg olyan embereket, akik nagyon szépen csinálják a formagyakorlatokat, de ha egyikük kimegy az utcára, nem tudja magát megvédeni. Az önvédelem titka, hogy mindig a test legkeményebb pontját kell használni a támadó leggyengébb pontjai ellen. Egy 50 kilós hölgynek is lehetősége lesz megvédeni magát egy 100-120 kg akár ittas támadóval szemben is.
Taekwondo cannot be torn to branches. If you grow only one branch, everything will be torn. I know people who are very good in poomsae, but if one of them is attacked on the street he would not be able to protect himself. The secret of self-defense is to use the toughest part of your body against the weakest part of the attacker. This way a 50 kg lady will have chance to protect herself against a 100-120 kg drunken attacker.
Ha sportként tekintünk a taekwondóra, azzal a szellemiséget öljük meg. A sport nagyon jó a gyerekeknek, ezt támogatni kell. Viszont fontos a tisztelet, az az alázat, amit a tanítvány társakkal szemben és a mesterekkel szemben tanúsítunk. Nem szabad elfelejteni ki a családod, ki az országod és ki a mestered.
If we take taekwondo as a sport, we kill its spirit. Sport is good for children, it has to be supported. But it is very important to show respect and humility towards our fellows and masters. You must never forget who your family, your country and master is.
Találkoztam Pesten egy tanítvánnyal, aki itt Vásárhelyen volt tanuló. Felismertem a tekintetéből, hogy ő tisztában van vele, hogy én ki vagyok. Megkérdeztem tőle, hogy eljött e Vásárhelyre, kellemes ünnepeket kívánni volt mestereinek. Azt válaszolta, hogy nem mert a mostani mesterei szülei másfelé terelték. Erre azt mondtam: soha ne szállj szembe a mesteriddel és a szüleiddel, de magyarázd meg nekik, hogy az itteni mesterek indítottak el az úton, ők kötötték rád az első öveket. Akkor még csak járni tudtál, de ők tanítottak meg szaladni és ugrani. Ez nagyon fontos, ezt sosem szabad elfelejteni.
I met a student in Budapest, who studied here in Vásárhely. I recognized his look that he knows who I am. I asked him if he came to Vásárhely to wish merry christmas for his former masters. He answered no, because his parents and masters directed him to another route. I answered him never act against your masters and parents, but explain them that these masters put you on the road, they tied the first belts on you. At that time you could only walk, they taught you to run and jump. This is very important, he should never forget about it.
Komoly meglepetés volt, a fogadtatás itt Vásárhelyen, az, hogy mindenki egységes edzőruhában volt. Sok helyen nincs ilyen, egyszerű utcai ruhában edzenek. Az egység egy családot hoz létre. Senkit sem érdekel, kinek milyen márkás ruhája van, csupán a testvériség van. A mesterek és a magasabb öves tanítványok segítik egymást és a kisebbeket is a fejlődésben. Sokan a világban meg sem közelítik ezt a színvonalat. Rendkívül kiemelkedő a tanítványok tudása. Ezeket pedig nem saját ötletek alapján mondom, sok hasonlítási alapom van.
I was surprised about the unified doboks the team has. In many schools students wear normal clothes on the trainings. Unity makes a family. Nobody cares what brand the other wears, only brotherhood exists. The masters and higher degree students help each other and the smaller ones to develop. You cannot find this standard everywhere in the world. The knowledge of the students is very high and I tell this because I have a basis of comparison.
Amerikában, a 30 államban nem biztos, hogy találunk egy olyan egyesületet is, ahol péntek délután, iskola után ennyi gyerek együtt gyakorol. A gyerek és a szülő is bízik a mesterben, hiszen az egyik legnagyobb kincs a gyermek egy szülő számára, akit rá bíz a mesterekre. Szerintem Magyarországon nincs még egy ennyire fejlett és összetartó csapat.”
I am not sure you can find a club in the USA, where so many children on Friday afternoon after school practice together. The child and the parent trust the master, because one of the biggest treasure for the parent is his child. I don’t think that there is another team, which is so developed and close in Hungary.”
Penelopenak is nagyon tetszett a tanulók hozzáállása és tudása. Nagyon kidolgozottak volta a mozdulatok, látszott a felkészültség. A zenei formagyakorlat nehéz és sokat kell gyakorolni, mert ott jön ki a taekwondo művészete, amit a tanítványok nagyon szépen bemutattak.”
Penelope also liked the attitude and knowledge of students. The movements were very precise, I can see they are very prepared. Music poomsae is very difficult, you have to practice a lot, because that’s where the art of taekwondo is shown and the students presented it very nicely.
Bolega mester folytatta: „Egy kisgyerek szíve, agya tiszta. Nézi a nagyokat, felnéz a nagyokra, hiszen még ő nem tudja az ugrásokat és a bonyolult mozdulatokat megcsinálni. Lehet, hogy meg is rémülnek ettől. Ezt a tanítónak fel kell ismernie és átsegítenie ezen a ponton a fiatalokat. Én például felveszem magam mellé „asszisztensnek” ezeket a kisgyerekeket. Viszem magammal, segít nekem. Leültetem, hogy nézze a többieket. Ilyenkor megnyugszik és pár perc múlva már ő is csinálja a feladatokat. Sok magánéleti problémát visznek be a tanítványok magukkal az edzésre és a mesternek kell, segít ezeken átlendülni és tudatosítani a tanítványokban, hogy holnap is lesz nap, a hullámok majd szépen kisimulnak. A sport, a harcművészet mellett ezeket a fontos feladatokat is felismerte a Máté család és ebben a szellemiségben neveli a tanítványokat.
Master Bolega continued: „The heart and mind of a child is clean. He watches the bigger ones, he respects them, because he cannot make those jumps and difficult movements. Maybe he is frightened because of this. The teacher must recognize this and must help him overcome on this difficulty. I employ these kids as „assisstants” for example. I take them with me, they help me. I ask them to sit and watch the others. Then they calm down and after a few minutes they can also do the exercises. Students bring many problems from their everyday life to the training and the master has to help them overcome and make them realize, that tomorrow will be a new day and the big waves will disappear. Besides sport and martial art, the Máté family recognized these important tasks as well and they educate the students according to this spirit.
A célom, hogy miután most megismertem az egyesületet és a vezetőket, szeretném elérni, hogy több amerikai mester megismerje őket, és minél stabilabb nemzetközi kapcsolatot építsünk ki. Nagyon meg volt becsülve a tudásunk, ugyan úgy, ahogy mi is, megbecsültük az ő tudásukat.
My goal after getting to know the club and its leaders to make them known by more American masters and to make solid international contacts. Our knowledge was respected as we respected their knowledge.
Mi mesterek a tanároknak és a szülőknek is segítünk, hiszen ha a tiszteletre és alázatra tanítjuk a gyerekeket, azt otthon sem felejtik el. A szülők pedig jöttek és megköszönték, hogy a gyermekkel megértettük ezeket. Én személy szerint mindig mondom a szülőknek, hogy egy héten legalább egyszer jöjjenek le egy órára és nézzék meg, mi mesterek hogyan segítünk.
We, the masters help the teachers and parents as well, because we teach respect and humility to the children and they don’t forget these at home. Personally I always tell the parents to come and watch the classes at least once a week.
Összességében nyugodt szívvel kijelenthetem, hogy amit itt láttam Vásárhelyen, ehhez hasonló tudással és hozzáállással csak Koreában és Ázsiában találkoztam ezelőtt.
All in all I can state that the knowledge and attitude I saw in Vásárhely can be found only in Korea and Asia.
